The 1960’s

The decade began with continued political upheaval in the North of Ireland.

As a result there was very little hurling taking place throughout Tyrone.

Dungannon had made attempts to enter the Armagh league in order to ensure competitive games could be played.

Unfortunately this was not always possible.

After Operation Harvest ended in late February 1962, it took a few years of regrouping and planning throughout Tyrone to get hurling back up and running.

There was no competitive action from 1962 to 1965.

It was decided in 1966 that if we could get as many games as possible outside of the County this would leave us in good stead once competitive action returned in Tyrone.

Our team of 1966 included the following players.

M Devlin, N Devlin, M Morgan, D Morgan, N Morgan, A McCann, T Hendrick, D Sheehan, G Herron, T Loughran, P McCaughey, B Cavlan, S Hamill, J O’Donnell, G McIntosh, S McGinn, J Arthurs, T O’Connor, F Benson, B Foley, S McHugh, S Meenan

The Benburb cup was to return to Dungannon in the summer of 1969, just as civil unrest was once again unfolding on our streets.
